Can this platform be used to store some other information too apart from using blockchains only as a source for cryptocurrency ?

You can store up to 64MB of data in hex format, per transaction...although personally I think it is better to store a hash of the actual data, which is stored elsewhere. If data stored on chain, it is usually immutable, so you have to be sure you want that data there for as long as the chain lasts.
