What exactly is MultiChain?

Is MultiChain opensource code that can be used to create an actual new and unique blockchain, like BitCoin, Ethereum, etc.? Or, instead, is MultiChain an opensource blockchain itself that supplies various tools to use to build ONTO MultiChain? Sorry for my naivety, but you're welcome for the softball! ;)

Yes, MultiChain is a piece of code that enables any number of separate blockchains to be created, and it's optimized for permissioned rather than open blockchains. In that sense it's just like a database platform. There is no official "MultiChain blockchain" that we or anyone else runs.
