How to upgrade to protocol 10008 after upgrading binaries to beta 1?

After upgrading the binaries for beta and launching daemon, the initial output says daemon on protocol 10008 but after connecting the output says protocol running at version 10007. If I manually change the protocol to 10008 in the params.dat file, the daemon won't start. How do I upgrade to protocol 10008?

Protocol 10008 is the first one that will allow upgrading a blockchain's protocol after it has started. So I'm afraid for a chain already running protocol 10007 your only option is starting a new chain with 10008. This is one of the reasons previous versions were called "alpha".
